Hello! This is Alexia (ESR14). I had the privilege of collaborating with my colleagues Alberto (ESR14), Marta (ESR7), and their PI, Dr. Martino Calamai, at the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS) in Florence, Italy.
LENS is home to a multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, and biologists working together to achieve high-resolution imaging and measurements of nano and micro-scale particles.
We conducted an in-depth study on the biocompatibility of the structure developed in collaboration with Beatrice (ESR1) at Fraunhofer IGB, Stuttgart, microparticles embedded in a gelatin matrix. We analyzed it using both quantitative methods and qualitative approaches, including high-resolution imaging. We successfully observed the colocalization of the loaded protein inside the microparticles, confirming that the study was effective! Additionally, we performed release studies using a confocal microscope to validate our findings on a macroscopic scale.
Beyond the research, this secondment was an enriching experience. I not only gained valuable scientific insights but also had the chance to connect with my colleagues on a personal level. Exploring Florence with Alberto and Marta, immersing ourselves in its history, and, in particular, tasting its delicious cuisine made this experience even more memorable.
I am incredibly grateful to Marta, Alberto, their supervisor Martino Calamai, and the entire LENS team for their support, hospitality, and collaboration. This opportunity has been both professionally and personally rewarding, and I look forward to future collaborations!
