Name: Alexia Maria Mihailescu

Host Organisation: Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology, Germany

Project Title: Bio-based hydrogels as drug delivery systems for the intranasal transmucosal delivery of Biopharmaceuticals

Supervisor: Dr. Carmen Gruber-Traub

Avatar

Objectives of the Project:

Modified hydrogels as carrier and drug delivery systems: Hydrogels will be chemically optimised for the potential use as new bio-based materials in considering the mechanical properties, the consistency and stability with regard to the intended application. The influence of various molecular weights and degree of substitution of crosslinking groups or concentration of crosslinking agents etc. on mechanical properties, gelation time and crosslinking density will be evaluated according to experimental results.

Secondments:

  • LENS
    • Task: Study movement of proteins/particles inside the hydrogel
    • Advisor: Martino Calamai
    • Duration: 3/4 weeks

Short Biography:

My name is Alexia Maria Mihailescu, and I graduated in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano in 2023. My specialization focused on cells, tissues, and biotechnology. After graduation, I received a scholarship from the university that funded a three-month internship across Europe. During this period, I was hosted by Uppsala University in Sweden.

I consider myself a curious person, always seeking new challenges and opportunities for personal and professional growth. I am deeply passionate about the biomedical field as a whole, and I believe that my contributions can lead to tangible benefits for the progress and well-being of society.
