LENS was established in 1991 as a European scientific research centre providing advanced laser and spectroscopic facilities for researchers from European countries and promoting and facilitating the exchange of ideas, scientific techniques, and technical skills. LENS is organised to conduct research in biophysics, neuroscience, atomic and molecular physics, and chemical physics of condensed matter. Notably, LENS is part of the Joint Research Activity BIOAPP of H2020 Laserlab-Europe axis, and of the Advanced Light Microscopy Italian Node of Euro-BioImaging (the European Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences), which provide training and open access to a broad range of state-of-the-art technologies in biological and biomedical imaging for researchers of all levels.
