The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB is one of 74 institutes of the Fraunhofer- Gesellschaft, Europe’s leading organization for applied research. The majority of the 28,000 staff are qualified scientists and engineers with an annual research budget of about 2.3 billion euros.

Fraunhofer IGB develops processes, technologies and products for health, sustainable chemistry and the environment. To deliver this, Fraunhofer IGB rely on the combination of biotechnological and process engineering competencies in order to contribute to human well-being, a sustainable economy and an intact environment with the systems approach of bio-economy and bio-inspired, bio-integrated and bio-intelligent solutions. Fraunhofer IGB provides customers with end-to-end solutions, from the laboratory to pilot-scale applications, accompanied by a wide range of analysis and testing services.

At the end of 2019, the Fraunhofer IGB had 339 members of staff, of which about 80 percent were scientific or technical employees. Women made up 53 percent of the total.
